A Watch
As a girl in the dating world, you take on a supporting role, while the boy is in the driver’s seat, both literally and figuratively. In a way, this is a bracha (blessing), since it means that you don’t have to be involved in anything other than putting the date in your calendar and getting ready for said occasion. On the other hand, however, girls can sometimes find themselves without a sense of control. Often, we don’t even know what the proper attire is because the activity is a surprise and all we can do is take an educated guess.
This is precisely why I believe it is beneficial to wear a wristwatch on a date. Many of us are accustomed to looking at our cellular devices or asking someone else for the time, neither of which is acceptable to do on a date. By wearing a watch, you can have a small sense of control, that is, you know what time it is. It’s hard to keep track of the time that has elapsed on the date itself, for sometimes minutes feel like an eternity, while at other times, you find yourself developing a flow, and you will be pleasantly surprised that time has passed, indeed.
In addition, I feel that when I don’t have any knowledge of what time it is, I’m not entirely connected to the reality which is bound by time. By being able to nonchalantly glance at your wrist, you can keep in mind how far along you are. This is especially useful on first dates which generally last about three hours. Wearing a watch can make you feel slightly more at ease, knowing how much longer you must be “on.”
